Lydia Glanville

Independent

Lydia has been playing drums since she was eight years old. She was inspired to pick up the sticks when she saw Nick Beck playing in Shropshire based Ceilidh band ´All Blacked Up´. As a youngster she took lessons with Claire Corn, Pekka Tanesken and Andy Richards and took part in activities run by Shropshire Music Service.

Lydia began performing at a professional level at the age of fifteen playing in ensembles as diverse as Brass Bands, Pit Bands, Orchestras, Jazz Groups and Rock Bands. One of her most formative playing experiences was joining the quintet of the trumpeter Jamie Brownfield when she was seventeen. The band gigged around the midlands and Mid-Wales for two years, performing at jazz clubs and festivals. They received high praise from the Midlands Jazz Network and were played on BBC Radio Wales. Lydia left the group after her move to Birmingham to take up a place at the Conservatoire.

She graduated with A BMus (Hons) in Jazz from Birmingham Conservatoire in June 2010. During her time there she was fortunate enough to have recieved first study tuition from Jeff Williams (Lovano, Konitz, Liebman, Getz), Tony Levin (Tubby Hayes, Mujician), Paul Clarvis (Orqestra Mahatma and session genius), Gene Calderazzo (Partisans, Zoe Rahman), Andrew Bain and Malcom Garret. In conjunction with ensemble coaching, lectures and workshops from Dave Holland, Mike Gibbs, Lee Konitz, Hans Koller, Liam Noble, Mike Williams, Julian Siegel and many others.

Whilst at the Conservatoire Lydia had many incredible performance and recording opportunities. These include supporting Dave Holland and John Taylor at a sold out concert in Birmingham, taking part in four UK tours and recording an album with Joe Broughton´s Conservatoire Folk Ensemble, setting up her ten piece Cuban band and Jazz Quartet, playing for the Debut of the ballet ´More Than Us´ and reaching the finals of the Tony Levin Drum Prize two years in a row and performing with Saxophone legend John Toussaint. In addition to her studies Lydia also found time to jointly establish the Folk Fusion group N.O.M.A.D, playing at Glastonbury Festival and touring in Mallorca, and be a full time member of the Kate Doubleday Band with whom she played at the Otto Freudenthal Musik Festival in Sweden and took part in a collaboration with a visual artist and Jamie Smith from Mabon.

Since graduating Lydia earns her living solely from music. She currently runs her own jazz quartet/octet who play their own compositions and Jazz Standards, and have played at the Birmingham, Cheltenham and Harmonic Jazz Festivals and Birmingham Town Hall, Theatre Severn and many other venues. She is also a founder member of the eight piece Contemporary Folk group The Bonfire Radicals, who mix English Folk music with Eastern European and Jazz influences. Lydia has performed with the group on the main stage of the Symphony Hall and at the Moseley Folk Festival as well as recording their debut EP.

When not playing in either of her two main projects Lydia can be found in pit bands or as a sideman in Jazz, World, Folk and Pop groups. A few highlights of her career include work with Hannah Rhodes, Holliday St, Kate Doubleday, David Garside, Joe Broughton, Jamie Brownfield, John William´s Westcoastin´, Jimmy Brewer, James Chadwick, Ben Thomas, Lee Goodall, James Wilson-Rhead, Trevor Lines and Sarah Boughton. Recently she has been invited to join an experimental project with three other jazz musicians and two laptop musicians who have been funded by PRS in conjunction with Jazzlines.

As well as playing music Lydia works extensively in Education. She works for Lichfield Arts´ ´Wildfire Folk Ensemble´ as well as Wolverhampton Grammar School and Hertfordshire Music Service. She is a guest lecturer at the Birmingham Conservatoire and their Junior Department, which has involved leading worskshops and coaching ensembles, and has worked on a freelance basis for the Barbican Education Department in London and Birmingham Jazz.

When not playing or teaching Lydia also works as a session musician. Her recording credits include work with Hannah Rhodes on her new children´s album and on her track ´La Gota de Cucho´ for Unicef, Holliday St´s track for the Joan Armatrading´s CD to accompany her latest tour, David Garside´s latest album on Frizz records at Gizzard Studios and helping the advertising company ´Bank´ record their annual Christmas song at Abbey Road Studios. In addition Lydia has recorded EPs of her quartet, her ten piece Cuban band Project Cubano, Trio Habanero, The Bonfire Radicals, N.O.M.A.D, Lewis Clement Trio with Strings and numerous student ensembles.
