Stefon "Spider" DuBose

Sly & The Family Stone

Stefon DuBose, also known as “Spider” in the music industry, has been playing the drums professionally and musically involved for the past twenty-eight years. He began playing at the tender age of 2 and grew up playing in church. Spider says he would sit in the metal folding chair every Sunday next to his drum instructor’s (Mr. Floyd Kennedy) church drum set watching his every move.

Spider’s drum interest sparked after attending a drum clinic featuring Billy Cobham at age 6 in which the legendary Tony Williams was there. Since then, Spider hasn’t looked back touring nationally across the United States and internationally to Europe; Hong Kong; Singapore; Thailand; Australia and Japan.

Spider is blessed to be endorsed with the following companies: Remo drumheads; Shine Custom Drums; Vic Firth drumsticks; EPAD practice pads; Rhythm Tech percussion; Factory Metal Percussion; DB drum shoes; Paiste cymbals, Shellkey drum keys and Protection Racket Cases.

Spider accredits Gospel as his music foundation but is fluent and familiar with genres of Latin; jazz, fusion, rock, marching band, ska, reggae, pop, blues, R&B, and hip-hop. Stefon has been blessed to perform with the following artist: Sly & The Family Stone band; Dennis Austin Sr. (Music Director for Bobby Brown); Paul Schafer (of the Tonite Show band); Sam Bostic (of Art N’ Soul); Kim Burrell; Eugene Cole & Persuaded (Jabez Records); Dorinda Clark-Cole; Judith Christie McCallister; Donnie McClurkin; Dewitt Johnson; Pastor Wes Morgan; Bishop Paul Morton Jr.; Pastor Rance Allen; Pastor Melvin Dawson; Natalie Wilson; Donald Lawrence; V. Michael McKay; Walter Hawkins & Love Center Mass Choir; Rizen; Ted & Shari; Bishop Marvin Winans; Richard Smallwood; Gospel Music Workshop of America Sacramento Chapter; Huie Lovelady & Unity Community Choir and many more.

Spider has won numerous accolades including the Sacramento Guitar Center Drum Off Winner (2000, 2001, and 2007) and placed each of those years in the Guitar Center Regional’s (4th, 3rd, 2nd) respectively. At age eleven Spider placed fourth at the Andy Penn’s Guitar City Drum Wars out of a field of 125. Spider has also taught high school drum line and has given private drum instruction for 8 years. Spider has recorded on nine gospel albums and numerous studio session recordings. He served as a session drum for A to Z studios in Laverne, CA as well and taught the drum-line at the Luther Burbank High School ”Marching Titans” (Sacramento, CA).

Spider’s musical influences include: Joel Smith, Dave Weckl, Carter Beauford, Dennis Chambers, Billy Cobham, Chris Daddy Dave, Stokely, Terri Lynn Carrington, Kirk Covington, Derico Watson, Calvin Rodgers & Thomas Pridgen.

Spider’s motto is: “Before You Play, Begin to Pray” and his philosophy of the 3P’s are: Patience, Practice and Perseverance.
