Team PR´s Tim Weller update

Great to hear from Tim Weller this week with this update as to what he has been up to in 2011; I´m delighted this week as Will Young´s new album "Echoes" has just gone into the charts at number 1. I really enjoyed drumming on it at Miloco Studios back in March with producer Richard X and am really happy with the way it has turned out.

Currently I´m working with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, recording an album of famous computer games music. This coming Friday, we´re performing it at the Royal Festival Hall. It´s always fun playing with a large ensemble and this will be my biggest yet, so I´m excited and nervous in pretty much equal measure!

70´s icon Bill Fay´s comeback album was also great fun to record and is currently being mixed in the US. Bill has been semi retired from the music industry for 40 years and there is a lot of excitement around this new record.

I´ve also been busy in my studio, doing on-line sessions for people all over the world. I´ve done a good mix of TV themes, library tracks and singer-songwriter tracks for people in LA, Quebec, Sydney, Dubai and London! Last week I did an advert for Cathay Pacific for two producer/composers, one of whom lives in Hong Kong and the other in Sweden...!

And of course, I´m still doing Billy Elliot, which is now well into its seventh year in the West End.

You can find out more about what Tim is up to on his site or by following tweller693 on twitter

Welcome to Frank Colucci...

Frank is the drummer in the unbelivabley fabulous "Brother"

The return of the great British guitar band.” – NME

“…the year’s most brilliantly brash young upstarts…” – The Fly

“…seriously impressive…” – The Sun

“Huge songs with personality to match – they’re going to be big, Brother.” – News Of The World

“Brother are as sharp as their songs are direct…” - The New York Times

“Integrity is incredibly important. We want our music to be heard, but not at the expense of integrity. If you don’t give yourself the option of fucking up, then you can’t fuck up.” – Lee Newell, Brother.

One of 2011’s most talked about bands, Brother release their highly anticipated debut album ‘Famous First Words’ on August 1st, on Geffen Records. Available digitally, on CD and 12” vinyl, the album will be preceded by the brilliant new single, ‘New Years Day’ (out June 27th).

Brother formed in Slough in January of 2010, over a joint love for the likes of Suede, The Smiths and The Stone Roses. Just over a year later they now find themselves on tour with their hero Morrissey, have an NME cover under their belts, are Zane Lowe’s Hottest Record In The World on Radio 1, and are on prime time TV in the US, on the revered Late Show with David Letterman.

Speaking about the recording of their debut, frontman Lee Newell said, "Working with Stephen Street was a turning point in this band and with him we have created something completely extraordinary. It seemed very natural. We´re not going to sit here and sell ourselves because that´s not what we´re about, we´re going to do things our way and have an absolute laugh with it. Everyone says that we are famous for what we say. This album is what we´ve been talking about."

Danny Farrant Buzzcocks

Danny Farrant, drummer in the legendary band Buzzcocks and inspirational drum educator, is running two days of drum workshops which he describes as “non-drum clinics” at Coexist in the heart of Bristol’s creative district.

Aimed at drummers of all levels, aged 11 up, the sessions are totally interactive.

"How many times have you been to a drum clinic or performance and felt that all you wanted to do is join in?" Danny has designed the workshops with this in mind and says, “There just aren’t enough opportunities for drummers to work together and get something amazing happening. This is partly due to lack of space, noise restrictions and equipment limitations but we’ve got the gear and the venue so come and join like-minded noisemakers and help us create a glorious cacophony of percussion, drums and beats in Bristol.”

Danny has teamed up with production company www.shootme.com and the performance at the end of each session will be filmed in glorious high definition by a professional cameraman and sound recordist. Students will get a copy to take away on their mobile phone or download when they get home and the performance can even count towards GCSE and BTEC coursework.

The workshops, which are being supported by Protection Racket and Aquarian Drumheads, will run on the 2nd and 3rd of June at Coexist, Hamilton House, Bristol BS1 3QY.

Craig Blundell Challenge!!!

THE CRAIG BLUNDELL ELECTRONICA CHALLENGE

Craig Blundell continues to raise the bar of creativity with his unique groundbreaking self-tuition product that is already getting amazing reviews from its user database

We’ve all been there haven’t we? We’ve had our big moment to shine at a gig or session and we can’t wait to get to the part where the band drops out and we can hit as many drums as possible in a short period of time! The moment arrives and we sound like we are falling down the stairs with our kit on our back! We come in too early or too late and the entire band glares at you like they want to kill you. The moment has gone, the rest of your gig is in ruins and it’s never really spoken about again, until the next gig where the band almost know it’s going happen again so they turn around and stare at you before you play it. Your confidence is in ruins and you find it hard to play the simplest of fills.

The truth is, it will never get better because we never practice “the drummers break” in rehearsal, we’re just expected to nail it every time. You need to work on your phrasing, sense of timing and, of course, the choice of notes you play. This CD will help you work on all of these and give you the opportunity to nail those fills and grooves that you never get time to rehearse. It will allow you to work out new ideas and build your confidence to be able to put them into your repertoire. As we progress on the 12 tracks of this album, the tempos will increase and in turn, the “stops” in the music will become longer. See it as a challenge not to move on until you’re really on top of all the starts, stops and all the changes. When you feel you are, go back and make the breaks more difficult, building your confidence, ability to count and of course your inner clock. We all have an inner clock for pretty much everything we do, from getting up in the morning to shutting down at night and from counting to a clock ticking to our own perception of time. Everything has a time span and as humans our judgment of “time” always seems quicker than it actually is. The more we work on this the better our perception of time will be. On each track, there are notes to help you and to give you ideas for each song.

At the core of any good drum part or drum fill lays a simplistic element. When I´m building my own parts I always start with the simplest of ideas. When the basic timing foundations are in place, you can take your drum parts anywhere your imagination wants to.

The "HOW TO" guide of putting all your parts together and mapping out the song is in the inlay booklet and it will really help you so please make sure you read the whole thing before attempting the challenges. Before the ‘drumless’ tracks on the CD there is a brief preview of the track with Craig’s drum parts, so you can get a feel for each track, but its only brief! He’ll help you with the first structure then after that it’s down to you! Remember though, this is a challenge and not all challenges are easy. Each track is slightly quicker than the last with more stop and more challenges. The stops will be very long near the end of the album and not in places they should be.

The Craig Blundell Electronica Groove challenge is an absolute must for Teachers, Students and players of all levels and abilities. Craig Set up a facebook page for all its users to post their own thoughts and share videos of them playing along to the material. The idea being that a 12 year olds perception of a track is very different to a 40 year olds perception of the same track, in turn they can all inspire each other. Copies can be purchased via www.craigblundell.net/bog or through the facebook community page; s://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Craig-Blundell-Electronica-Groove-Challenge/134446366623880

James Hester Mind Over Meter

Team Protection Rackets James Hester, drummer for the incredible Cars On Fire has written his first book…read on;

“I began writing the book a long time ago, although initially the ideas were just for me to work on - stickings to help me play certain subdivisions. Then I started mixing them up and incorporating the bass drum. I found I was able to improvise fills and linear grooves more easily and play tricky phrasings and rhythms with ease. I also realised whilst teaching at BIMM (Bristol Institute of Modern Music) that I was using the same basic ideas that are in the book to teach in class and also for the tutorials we have – you name it: polyrhythm’s, jazz comping, latin, four way co-ordination, fills, linear grooves, odd time signatures… everything! More recently in the studio whilst recording with Cars On Fire, producer Jason Wilcocks was putting me through my paces and was really making me think about left and right side ideas from the perspective of the microphones and panning. I adapted the same sticking ideas to help me develop my right side/left side, hands/foot and diagonal co-ordination. Finally my years of studying drummers and stripping back their ideas has led me to the essential seven options we have as drummers. The last chapter of the book is a study of these options and how other people have put them into practice do sound completely individual but with the same basic idea with a view to you doing the same.

I know that working through the ideas in this book will increase your ability to play whatever ideas come into your head and that by developing your coordination and control over meter, your level of creativity will be boosted”

‘Mind Over Meter’ is available at www.jameshester.co.uk costing £15 (UK P&P + £1.30).

Facebook page with audio and video related to the video – search ‘Mind Over Meter’ on Facebook.

Danny Farrant YouTube

PUNK-TUITION FOR THE GUITAR HERO GENERATION

Buzzcocks drummer Danny Farrant has posted the first of a series of HD videos on YouTube. The four-minute film gives wannabe drummers everything they need to master "the most fundamental beat of all" and is, of course, free.

The ongoing project is collaboration with film-maker Matt Thurling. Matt, who helped Gorillaz and Peter Gabriel launch online ventures, says "Buzzcocks are my all time favourite band, Danny is an old mate, and YouTube is the greatest educational resource ever created. This isn´t work."

The film is made up of clear and simple instructions from Danny and shows people as much as it tells them how to do it. It features an innovative form of musical notation, not dissimilar to Guitar Hero.

The band’s upcoming album produced by Howard Benson (My Chemical Romance, All-American Rejects) boasts an eclectic mix of the band’s trademark drumming on found objects and fully realized rock/pop songs - such as “Knock Me Out” - with Bobby Alt on vocals. The Buzzcocks Danny Farrant

One of our, Danny Farrant, was caught up in a bomb scare with his band, the Buzzcocks last week. This is taken from an article in Time Out New York: "Last night, a roadie came out onto the Fillmore New York at Irving Plaza stage and interrupted the Buzzcocks midway through the band’s performance of “E.S.P.” Pete Shelley, the frontman of the massively influential British punk band—credit/blame them for American Idiot, folks!—stopped the song; this could not wait. “Is there an owner of a 1991 blue Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera in the house?” he asked in his thick Bolton accent. Soon after, an ominous message appeared on the venue’s video screens, telling us… “There is a police investigation in front of the building. NYPD says no one can leave the building until the police give the go ahead [sic]. So please remain and enjoy yourselves until further notice.” Followed by the plea to whoever owns that damn car to “talk to management.” Almost immediately, the band resumed playing their first two albums in their entirety—Another Music in a Different Kitchen and Love Bites, both from 1978, and both crammed with the band’s Beatles-tunes-at-a-million-miles-an-hour punk nuggets—then did an encore of other greatest hits (I bet someone $10,000 that they’d do “Orgasm Addict,” and I really should try to collect). I’ve since discovered that that Olds had gas canisters in the back seat and was parked outside ConEd headquarters, and a bunch of nearby buildings were evacuated. It was nothing—a classic punk fan mows lawns for a living—but in this day and age, the New York Police Department can never be too careful. We live in strange times, and as Shelley declared in one of his few shreds of between-song banter, “You know what isn’t what it used to be? Nostalgia.” " In terms of the performance, it was apparently a fantastic show. The author was pretty taken with Danny in particular as you can see from this quote from the same article. "They’re such great songs, and the band was having so much fun—and the current drummer, Danny Farrant, inspired swoons from my fellow TONY staffer Heather Moore, both for playing like a motherf****r and for having great hair—that it was impossible not to revel in the pop-punk perfection, even 32 years later." We couldn´t agree more!

Mike Hall (Rubylux) Update

Had this in from Team protection Rackets Mike Hall of the awesome Rubylux; "I´m currently in the studio in France, with Rubylux, working on our Debut album with producer James Sanger (Keane, Dido, U2) I´ve been here for the past 2 months, and we´re hoping to have the album wrapped up in the new year. Everything is sounding great, and we´ve been experimenting with some really cool sounds, and different ways of recording the kit. Its been a pretty crazy year so far, I was with Sony/RCA Act ´Will and The People´ for the festival season, and had a great time playing Glasto, T in the Park, Oxygen etc... We we´re also lucky enough to support The script, Paulo Nutini and even Girls Aloud on a number of their tour dates, which was absolute blast, playing some awesome venues along the way. Looking into next year, have a load of dates with Rubylux in Asia in Feb, touring round the Hard Rock Cafes! Looking forward to that. And in March we´ll be back to start promotion on the Album, which is due for release in April time. Thanks for the update Mike and keep up the good work!! Cheers Deano

Led Bib Mercury Music Prize!

Team Protection Rackets Mark Holub´s band LED BIB have been shortlisted for the 2009 Barclaycard Mercury Music Prize. Congrats to Mark & the lads from everyone here at PR HQ, read on; Young British jazz band Led Bib were today announced as an ´Album of the Year´ in the 2009 Barclaycard Mercury Prize. Led Bib are creators of a new euphoric jazz-rock sound that’s as brutal as it is seductive. They caught the ear of the Mercury judges with their latest album and third studio recording ‘Sensible Shoes’, which was released through Cuneiform Records on May 4th 2009. The group’s bandleader and drummer Mark Holub gave this statement: “It’s all still sinking in and I don’t think anyone of us can believe it’s real. To be nominated for an award like this when you create more esoteric music, which usually operates out if the mainstream feels almost incomprehensible. We are just so overwhelmed and pleased and want to thank everyone who has supported us over the last five years!” An unassuming quintet of Walthamstow based twenty-something friends, Led Bib is comprised of bandleader Mark Holub on drums, Liran Donin on electric and upright bass, Toby McLaren playing Fender Rhodes and piano and Chris Williams and Pete Grogan up front as the two duelling alto sax players. Over the five years the group have played together they have torn apart the jazz world with their avant-jazz-euphoric-rock explosions of improvisation. Although they have received massive critical acclaim, larger recognition and a crossover into the mainstream has until now eluded them. Their album Sensible Shoes expresses the realities and dreams of life living in London, seen through the prism of the member’s different cultural heritages from Edmonton and New Jersey to Israel. Their individual references peer out from the record with Metallica-like riffs and Northern Soul licks meeting New York Downtown influenced improvisation. By making the Mercury shortlist the army of ardent fans who have championed Led Bib from inception can feel that justice has at last been served for the hard working quintet. And with an esoteric choice like Led Bib being nominated, dangerous music is back on the pop agenda. A recent prediction in the Sunday Telegraph has proven to be somewhat prescient: “And if the Mercury Prize judging panel gives them the token jazz-act nomination- which is the least reward their third album Sensible Shoes deserves – bigger stages will certainly beckon.” Led Bib Live Dates: *August 2009 London date to will be announced imminently 8 September 2009 Mercury Prize announcement ceremony 2 October 2009 The Vortex. London, UK 14 October 2009 The Queens Theatre, Barnstaple, Devon 23 October 2009 Derby Jazz, Derby, UK 10 December 2009 Nottingham Jazz, Nottingham, UK Links: ://www.ledbib.com ://www.cuneiformrecords.com (high res. band images available here) ://www.mercuryprize.com Led Bib are available for interview. Drum Guru Tuning Basics DVD

Martin Ranscombes ´Tuning Basics for the Modern Drum Set´ Team Protection Racket artist and drum tuning guru Martin Ranscombes passion for drums started nearly 30 years ago and, coupled with a natural tendency to experiment with pretty much anything, has developed, stolen and modified many ideas and methods relating to tuning and enhancing the sound of drums. After years of study, Martin has compiled his expert advise on an interactive DVD which covers all aspects of getting the most out of your drums, dispelling myths and tales on drum tuning ´folk law’. Martin told Protection Racket, ‘The DVD is essentially aimed at getting drummers of all persuasions enthused about tuning their drums by giving them a straightforward and easy to remember system that will, hopefully, go some way to demystifying the so-called ‘black art’ of tuning drums. Most drummers seem to struggle on some level or another with tuning, so it’s one part of my long-term mission to make the whole subject a great deal easier and a whole lot more fun in the process. I´ve got a copy and have to say it´s a brilliant instructional DVD that does what it says on the tin (sorry DVD case!), Martin is a natural presenter (very funny!) and the drumming clips with him and Ian Palmer are blinding!! Go get yours elf a copy and sack ya drum tech :-) The DVD is published by Stick Library and is available NOW through www.MusicRoom.com and all good music shops via Music Sales Ltd. Check out Martins website @ www.drumguru.co.uk Cheers Dean
