Ian Newton Grant

Flux

Ian Newton-Grant is a friendly, talented and working musician who has an overwhelming passion for music and anything related to it. Ian has been playing drums for 14 years and as a London-based musician, he has grown up listening to an array of different genres of music ranging from Hip-Hop, Jazz, Drum and Bass right through to Folk, Rock and Punk. Some of Ian’s biggest musical influences are Stevie Wonder, Earth, Wind and Fire, John Coltrane, Dennis Chambers, Steve Gadd and Victor Wooten plus many more. Thanks to this kaleidoscope of eclectic sounds and genres, Ian has been able to hone all these musical flavors to make him one of the UK’s most versatile and sought-after drummer and tutor.

During his career so far, he has had the pleasure of working with artists spanning across many different genres: Tinchy Stryder, Chipmunk, Tinie Tempah, Bashy (UK Urban artists), TQ (US Hip-Hop & R&B), Faye Patton, Claude Deppa, Courtney Pine (UK Jazz artists), Hamish Stuart (Funk), Spiral Compass (Progressive Rock), London Break Beat Orchestra (Drum and Bass), Juanita Bynum, Triple O (US & UK Gospel), Shammi Pithia and Ash King (Asian & World) to name a few.

Ian has also played in many of the UK’s finest and well established performance arenas and festivals. He regularly performs in the Barbican and the Royal Festival Hall and has graced the stages of the Royal Albert Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall, Jazz Café, Isle of White Jazz Festival, and Ronnie Scotts Jazz Club.

As a tutor, Ian has travelled across the UK leading and facilitating workshops and classes in both curriculum and non-curriculum environments. He currently has in excess of 150 pupils a week learning skills ranging from basic to advanced level drum kit to music technology and studio engineering.

Ian is currently working with Claude Deppa, a world-renowned South African Jazz trumpeter and his next scheduled gig is at London’s Jazz Cafe. Faye Patton is a Jazz/Blues singer/songwriter that Ian has also been working with and he features on her latest album Dangerous Loving. Ian made his Glastonbury debut with Shammi Pithia (as part of the band Flux – a six-piece fusion group which Ian is a founding member of) on the BBC Introducing stage. Flux have since gone to produce their debut release “Mirror EP”, which has caught the ears of many people within the industry. Within weeks of the release of their EP, the title track from the EP was played on BBC Radio 2 and caught the ears of many people within the Asian music network, Bobby Friction commenting that Flux we’re fresh and vibrant. Talvin Singh also invited Flux to headline as part of his music festival at Kings Place and headlined on the BT London Live Olympic Stage last year.

Ian’s future plans are to push the boundaries of music and rhythm via his work with Flux, Shammi Pithia, Faye Patton and the many other musicians he collaborates with and to share his love and passion for music with anyone and anyone that will listen.
