Roy Pfeffer

Independent/Roy’s Big Smoke Family

Roy Pfeffer is a London based musician from Tel-Aviv. An active member on the London Music scene he is s a versatile session drummer and bandleader.

After 7 years of studying with some of Israel’s legendary drummers he attended the Rimon School of Jazz and Contemporary Music, before moving to London in 2001.

Since then he has toured internationally with artists such as polish popstar Pati Yang, producer Stephen Hilton (Badly Drawn Boy), Anthony Costa (Blue), Sam and the Womp, Daniel Bedingfield, Dom and the Ikos and Imperial Leisure amongst others. A touring highlight was with ska group Shtetl Superstars, playing at Sziget festival and at Colors of Ostrava festival in 2013 to an audience of over 20,000 people supporting Janelle Monae and sharing the bIll with Alanis Morissette.

He can be heard on recordings by Folk artist Lisbee Stainton , South african Trip hop band Fetish , Jazz vocalist Anjali Perin, Metal band Mofo Is Dead , Emi artist Tony Laf and film soundtracks such as “Black Water Transit” (starring Laurence Fishbourne).

He has been involved in some great theater productions, most recently as part of choreographer Arthur Pita’s critically acclaimed show “Nobody’s Baby - the world’s greatest show” which toured the UK including performances at the Royal Opera House in London.

Some of his most rewarding work has been as bandleader with his own projects, most notably with his New Orleans inspired funk band Roy’s Big Smoke Family. A great lover of New Orleans music, Roy started the band in 2010 and since saw it go from strength to strength, from residencies at clubs such as Charlie Wright’s and The Shoreditch, to playing festivals such as the London Jazz Festival, Secret Garden party and Bestival. They are currently playing regular shows at the world famous Ronnie Scott’s in soho and have just recorded their debut album, to be released in the spring.

He also runs Our Little Trio - a piano trio playing some great standards and Yellow Lenses - an Organ quartet inspired by legendary New Orleans drummer Idris Muhammad who passed in 2014.
